What Welsh Government support is being given to people in education with learning difficulties?

Answered by Cabinet Secretary for Education | Answered on 05/06/2024

Children and young people up to the age of 25 who are receiving education or training in Wales are covered by the Additional Learning Needs (ALN) system. Learners with a learning difficulty or disability that calls for additional learning provision (ALP) are entitled to a statutory plan of support called the individual development plan. IDPs set out the action that must be taken to support individuals by describing the ALP which must be secured for them.

To continue our support for schools to implement the ALN system, I have recently announced an additional £20m to help with building and updating sensory areas, specialist equipment upgrades, specialist classrooms and outdoor spaces as well as improving ALP through the medium of Welsh. The Welsh Government also protected ALN funding in this year’s budget against an incredibly challenging economic backdrop.
