What assessment has the Welsh Government made of the potential impact on social justice of the devolution of probation powers?

Answered by Cabinet Secretary for Culture and Social Justice | Answered on 05/06/2024

The Welsh Government has been actively preparing for the devolution of probation. We have been working with operational experts and leading academics, including the Welsh Centre for Crime and Social Justice, to develop a vision for future probation services in Wales, based on evidence-based practice and trauma-informed approaches.

We recognise that first and foremost, we must address the needs of people in the justice system. Therefore, a key element of our approach is a shift towards a justice system rooted in prevention and rehabilitation. We believe that by taking a holistic approach that integrates justice with health, education and social services, we can better meet the needs of communities.

We are already demonstrating our commitment to this approach through our Women’s Justice and Youth Justice Blueprints.
