What is the cost of training a dentist in Wales?

Answered by Cabinet Secretary for Health and Social Care | Answered on 31/05/2024

Dental foundation training became mandatory on 1 October 1993, making it compulsory for all graduates of British dental schools to hold a certificate showing completion of an approved course (or experience equivalent to that course) before they can become a performer on an NHS contract. The Welsh Government funds dental foundation training in Wales.

The costs of providing dental foundation training places in Wales (following graduation) equates to approximately £142,454 per trainee and is funded from the health budget.

This does not include any costs associated with undergraduate studies in dentistry nor any payments which may be made to Welsh domiciled students under the NHS Wales bursary scheme or support provided from Student Finance Wales.
