What is the Welsh Government doing to promote the AIG Women's Open that will be played at Royal Porthcawl for the first time in 2025 to help increase women's participation in sport across Wales?
The AIG Womens’ Open will bring some of the world’s best female golfers to Wales next year and will showcase the internationally renowned Championship course at Royal Porthcawl Golf Club. This is building on Wales’ existing reputation as a highly regarded host nation for golf events and Porthcawl’s previous experience of hosting three Senior Open Championships. Welsh Government will be working with the event owners, the R&A, and local partners to maximise the benefits associated with the event, including using the event to enhance existing work to encourage women and girls into golf.
The tournament is another example of how Wales Golf is bringing to life its five-year strategy, ‘Everyone’s Game’, which aims to cement golf’s position as a thriving and developing sport that is inclusive and accessible for all. The event is an important milestone in the governing body’s journey to make the sport more visible and appealing to women and girls, and to increase the number who play, enjoy and take up leadership positions in the sport.
