What work has been done so far to implement the recommendations of the Children’s Commissioner for Wales’s report into education in healthcare settings?

Answered by Cabinet Secretary for Education | Answered on 29/05/2024

The recommendations made by the Children’s Commissioner for Wales in her report into education in healthcare settings relate to amending guidance and drafting new education other than at school (EOTAS) referral and commissioning guidance.

We will be updating the Supporting Learners with Healthcare Needs guidance, and are developing EOTAS referral and commissioning guidance.

The guidance will make it clear that it is our expectation that EOTAS pupils, including those who are in healthcare settings, have access to full-time education where this is appropriate for individual pupils.

To inform the guidance we will engage with stakeholders including those who deliver education in healthcare settings to understand issues associated with the current arrangements for funding education in healthcare settings.

Consultation on the revised Supporting Learners with Healthcare Needs guidance and the EOTAS referral and commissioning guidance is expected to take place during 2025.
