What progress has been made in fully connecting Wales with gigabit-capable broadband infrastructure?

Answered by Cabinet Secretary for Economy, Energy and Welsh Language | Answered on 29/05/2024

Telecommunications is not a devolved matter and responsibility for connecting Wales with gigabit capable broadband infrastructure rests with the telecommunications industry, Ofcom and the UK Government.

According to Ofcom’s Connected Nations Spring Update 2024, 69 per cent of premises in Wales can access gigabit capable broadband.

The Welsh Government has stepped into this non-devolved policy area and has provided access to gigabit capable broadband to more than 121,000 premises in Wales through our Superfast Cymru project and our recent full fibre roll-out. Our Local Broadband Fund has provided over £11 million to projects throughout Wales.
