Which other locations were considered for building the new Cardiff Velindre Cancer Centre in Whitchurch?

When the Strategic Outline Programme for the new cancer hospital was endorsed in 2015, Welsh Ministers agreed that the new hospital would be located in Whitchurch. There were a number of reasons for this including patient accessibility based on attendance statistics; the reputation of Velindre in the Whitchurch area; and the potential for a land swap with Cardiff and Vale University Health Board, reducing the overall cost to the NHS.

In 2015, Velindre NHS Trust commissioned a review of potential sites within the Whitchurch area. It concluded the existing site was too small therefore it focussed on two new sites. The first was close to the existing location owned by Velindre NHS Trust and available to be developed but separated by the disused Whitchurch Hospital. The alternative, and much larger greenfield site, was to the north of the Whitchurch estate and owned by Cardiff and Vale University Health Board.
