Will the Cabinet Secretary instruct local authorities not to install any new 20mph signage or painted roundels until the revision to the exceptions guidance has been completed?

Answered by Cabinet Secretary for North Wales and Transport | Answered on 20/05/2024

The local authorities are the local highway authority, so it is for them to determine the signs that are installed on their roads, I cannot direct them in the manner you request.

On the 23 April I provided an oral statement to the Senedd setting my priorities for transport and 20mph speed limits. My immediate priority on 20mph is to listen, and I am currently engaging with elected representatives, businesses, and communities across Wales.

This listening programme will help us to deliver targeted change to the 20mph implementation when the revised guidance is published in July.

Once local authorities have worked with communities and new guidance is finalised, they will be able to begin the process of adjusting speed limits on relevant roads. This process is expected to begin from September.
