Will the Cabinet Secretary confirm what proportion of hospital wards are single sex, how many are mixed sex, and what the plans are to ensure all wards are single sex?

Answered by Cabinet Secretary for Health and Social Care | Answered on 29/05/2024

The numbers of mixed and single sex hospital wards are not held centrally.

The Welsh Government commissioned a task and finish group to review single-sex and mixed sex accommodation across NHS Wales earlier this year. The findings will be reported in the summer.

The responsibility for protecting people’s privacy; dignity and allocation of accommodation are made at ward level and ward/department sisters/charge nurses have the authority, knowledge and skills to improve the hospital environment and standards of care in every hospital in Wales.
