Will the Cabinet Secretary make a statement on the access to care, treatment, and support available for people in Wales affected by sickle cell and thalassaemia blood disorders?

Answered by Cabinet Secretary for Health and Social Care | Answered on 20/05/2024

The management of patients with Sickle cell and thalassaemia in Wales is a centrally commissioned service with Cardiff being the designated centre for the south and mid Wales and Liverpool for north Wales.

The service includes all aspects of specialist care, but patients may well present to their local hospital initially for acute management which would be provided in conjunction with specialist input as required, and potential transfer of patients if required for specialist support. The specialist centre also provides annual reviews and broader support such as Psychology.
