What is the anticipated cost of the Swansea Bay Metro?
The Welsh Government’s metro programmes are made up of many different projects which are at different stages of their development. There is not a total predicted cost. Whether projects proceed will depend upon the strength of their business case and the availability of funding, including from the UK Government for non-devolved infrastructure.
As part of our work to support regional transport planning, the South West Wales Corporate Joint Committee is currently developing a Regional Transport Plan. The groundwork for which has been set by our Swansea Bay and West Wales Mero programme which includes large scale pilots of a fleet of hydrogen fuel cell buses by the mid-2020s; investment in the Traws Cymru T1 bus service (linking Aberystwyth and Carmarthen) to introduce combined bus / rail ticketing and convert the fleet and depot to battery electric operation; and investment to increase Active Travel development capacity and capability in West Wales.
