Will the Cabinet Secretary clarify the estimated cost of building a Welsh north-south transmission system link using pylons?

Answered by Cabinet Secretary for Economy, Energy and Welsh Language | Answered on 29/04/2024

We are unable to clarify the estimated cost of building a Welsh north-south transmission system link.

National Grid Electricity Transmission (NGET) is considering options for routes to meet the requirement for a north-south transmission system link in Wales, as identified in the Future Energy Grids for Wales report, and also confirmed in the UK-wide Beyond 2030 transitional centralised strategic network plan. Once potential route options are identified, NGET is likely to produce high level cost estimates that may be shared with Welsh and UK Governments.

The Independent Advisory Group for Future Electricity Grid for Wales is currently being convened and will consider the question of costs of new networks using various methods of construction.
