How is the Welsh Government making it easier for people to lose weight in Wales?

Answered by Cabinet Secretary for Health and Social Care | Answered on 29/04/2024

Obesity is a leading cause of ill health associated with serious but preventable illnesses. It is the leading cause of several major conditions including type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease and some cancers, and there are also links with orthopaedic problems, poor mental health and depression. Our Healthy Weight: Healthy Wales strategy is based on international evidence that prevention and early intervention are crucial if we are to change current obesity trends and the impacts. The strategy takes a cross-government approach to reducing obesity, combining individual behaviour change with systemic change to create healthier environments and support for everyone. The strategy includes programmes across the life course, providing support for people of all ages. We provide funding for Health Boards to provide weight management services for the populations that they serve.
