What consideration has the Welsh Government given to the introduction of artificial intelligence in NHS Wales digital services?
Our digital and data strategy for health and social care highlights our increased focus on and intention to take advantage of emerging technologies, such as Artificial Intelligence.
A number of services are using AI tools to support clinicians in their work – for instance in the diagnosis of prostate and breast cancer. We have commissioned research into this area – a recently published rapid evidence review, highlighted evidence that AI may improve diagnostic accuracy in clinicians/radiologists with less experience of interpreting radiological images.
Working with our partners in the NHS, social care and life sciences, we are undertaking a programme of activity to build on our existing work of enabling the safe and ethical use of AI. Including the availability of data, effective hosting and management of the technology and ensuring that the appropriate skillsets are in place to make use of it.
I appreciate the benefits that the effective use of this technology may hold, but also recognise that people have concerns about this technology. In particular, the potential for bias in the data used to deliver AI services, disruption and impact on the labour market and concerns around misinformation.
To help answer this challenge, we have established the AI Commission for Health and Social Care – a senior advisory group which will provide advice and support on the regulation and adoption of safe, responsible, and ethical AI in Wales.
We are also working with colleagues in the UK and devolved governments to share best practice and understand risks.
