What is the Welsh Government doing to engage with the United Nation’s International Decade of Indigenous Languages (2022-2032) initiative?

Answered by Cabinet Secretary for Economy, Energy and Welsh Language | Answered on 22/04/2024

Cymraeg 2050: A million Welsh speakers sets out our commitment to increasing global awareness of Wales as a bilingual nation and promoting the Welsh language internationally.

Our International strategy is clear on our ambition to establish Wales as a globally responsible nation and that language is a key element of that.

Our active participation in the UNESCO Decade of Indigenous Languages is key to that action. Officials maintain regular communication with UNESCO colleagues to deliver a collaborative work plan for the decade. We are concentrating on sharing best practice and learning with other regions and countries with indigenous languages, particularly in the digital sphere.

We are also working with key partners such as Wales Arts International and Urdd Gobaith Cymru on various projects related to the decade such as the Gwrando Fund. We have also incorporated activity into our annual ‘Wales in’ Years in Canada, France and India.
