How is the Welsh Government working with Building Digital UK to reach the hard-to-reach areas where it would cost more to deliver broadband than the current UK Government voucher scheme would cover?

Answered by Cabinet Secretary for Economy, Energy and Welsh Language | Answered on 12/04/2024

The UK Government does not operate a superfast broadband funding scheme.

The business case under development is for a discrete Welsh Government led project to provide fast and reliable broadband to some of the hardest to reach premises in Wales rather than contribute financially to Project Gigabit. I will provide an update on the project in due course.

The Welsh Government does not operate a scheme to top-up the UK Government voucher scheme.

Welsh Government officials meet monthly with their counterparts from both Building Digital UK and the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology to discuss the roll-out of broadband to premises across Wales. This includes the Gigabit Infrastructure Subsidy element of Project Gigabit, the developing UK Government policy on providing broadband to very hard to reach premises and Welsh Government led interventions.

No decisions have yet been taken with regard to the use of the £70 million clawed back from the Superfast Cymru project.
