How is the Minister working with Merthyr Tydfil County Borough Council and Natural Resources Wales to ensure that pollution levels do not rise at the Ffos-y-Fran site?

Answered by Cabinet Secretary for Climate Change and Rural Affairs | Answered on 27/03/2024

Welsh Government continues to work closely with Merthyr Tydfil County Borough Council (MTCBC) and Natural Resources Wales (NRW) to monitor the ongoing developments at Ffos-y-Fran.

As the owner and operator for the site, Merthyr (South Wales) Ltd (MSW) remains responsible for managing pollution levels. Nevertheless, the Minister has recently contacted MTCBC to understand the ongoing challenges across all areas of operation and to offer assistance. MTCBC has accepted the offer and Welsh Government will provide some support to undertake priority work areas, including environmental assessments.

Meanwhile, Welsh Government, MTCBC and NRW are all members of Ffos-y-Fran’s Technical Working Group which meets regularly to discuss all areas of operation and restoration, including pollution levels.
