What action is the Minister taking to encourage more people to become secondary school teachers?

Answered by Cabinet Secretary for Education | Answered on 27/03/2024

The recruitment and retention of suitably qualified staff is the responsibility of employing bodies i.e. local authorities and schools.

The Welsh Government also promotes the profession to support initial teacher education (ITE) recruitment into secondary ITE via our Teaching Wales marketing campaign. This is supported by EWC’s advocacy work which includes attendance at career fairs, schools, and large-scale events. The ITE incentive schemes also focus predominantly on supporting secondary ITE recruitment. For those unable to access ‘traditional’ full-time ITE programmes the Welsh Government also provides support for student teachers on the alternative ITE routes, available across a range of secondary subject specialisms.
