What action is the Welsh Government taking to increase the uptake of the COVID booster jab amongst eligible people?

Answered by Cabinet Secretary for Health and Social Care | Answered on 03/04/2024

The 2023/24 Winter Respiratory Vaccination Programme (which includes the COVID-19 booster programme) will end on 31 March.  Uptake levels have been closely monitored and assessed at both a local and national level.

We saw uptake challenges in both the flu and COVID-19 aspects of the programme throughout the season.  In response to those challenges, in November, I asked Vaccination Programme Wales in the NHS Executive to work with health boards to ensure a concerted effort was made in every area to maximise uptake.  These efforts were supported by a local and national “communications push” in December.

Work is now underway to analyse data and insight at a local and national level to identify lessons, which will inform our strategy and planning for the 2024/25 programme.

I also announced, on 7 February, that the COVID-19 spring booster programme will run from 1 April to 30 June.  This programme will offer boosters to adults aged 75 years and over, older adult care home residents and immunosuppressed people who are aged 6 months and over.  All those who are eligible will be contacted by their health board.  Once again, uptake levels will be closely monitored and targeted interventions will be made should it become necessary.
