Will the Minister provide an update on what guidance has been given to local authorities on classifying roads as 20, 30 or 40 mph?

Answered by Deputy Minister for Climate Change | Answered on 13/03/2024

On 17 September 2023, the law changed the default speed limited on restricted roads. These are usually residential or busy pedestrian streets with streetlights. We provided local authorities with guidance to help them to choose which of their roads should remain at 30mph.

Current guidance for Setting Local Speed Limits in Wales (SLSLiW) can be found at Guidelines for setting local speed limits in Wales (gov.wales). We are in the process of updating the SLSLiW guidance, to reflect current Welsh Government policy including the national roll-out of 20mph speed limits and to meet the ambitions highlighted in Llwybr Newydd: the Wales Transport Strategy. The update will also consider the findings in the final report on the 20mph default speed limit review of exceptions.
