How often does the Minister review the repairs schedule on the trunk road network and motorway network to ensure the timetable is being met?

Welsh Ministers have delegated their Highway Authority duties to the Welsh Government. Welsh Government officials instruct their Trunk Road Agents to inspect and maintain the strategic road network on a regular basis in accordance with their statutory duties, complying with UK standards.

Last year Matthew Lugg OBE undertook an independent review of how we maintained our roads.  It challenged us to think differently about how we maintain and renew our road network to comply with statutory duties and our response to the climate emergency.  Following on from the Lugg report we have developed a major asset renewal programme which will ensure we invest in maintenance and improvement where it is most needed.

Officials are planning significant repairs to sections of the M4 in the FY 2024/25 and have instructed their Trunk Road Agents to repair any safety related defects in accordance with timeframes set out in the Welsh Government Trunk Road Maintenance Manual.
