What progress has been made on preparing to incorporate UN Conventions into Welsh law?
Wales was the first country in the UK to enshrine Children’s Rights into law through the Rights of Children and Young Persons (Wales) Measure 2011. The Measure places a duty on Welsh Ministers to have due regard to the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC) when exercising any of their functions.
A Legislative Options Working Group is established to advise the Welsh Government, through the Human Rights Advisory Group chaired by myself and the Minister for Social Justice and Chief Whip, on incorporation of the United Nations Convention of the Rights of Disabled People and the Convention on the Elimination of all Forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW). The group have submitted a draft working interim report and continue to analyse the treaties on a right-by-right basis to reach their final recommendations.
