What is the Welsh Government doing to encourage the use of Welsh produce in school meals in South Wales Central?

Answered by Minister for Education and the Welsh Language | Answered on 27/02/2024

We are encouraging local authorities to maximise the amount of Welsh produced food on school plates, by working closely with Wales-based manufacturers, producers and wholesalers and collaborating with other local authorities where appropriate to aggregate demand. This aims to shorten supply chains and reduce food miles, support local food producers and distributors, and strengthen the Foundational Economy. We are supporting a collection of pilot projects through collaboration with the Welsh Government’s Backing Local Firms Fund and Innovation Fund, specifically supporting the local food ambition in schools.
