What alternative strategies or initiatives is the Welsh Government considering to promote afforestation and enhance the overall environmental impact, beyond the sustainable farming scheme?
Over 80% of land in Wales is used for agriculture and we want farmers to continue to play an important part in achieving our woodland creation targets under the Sustainable Farming Scheme. We have committed to creating a National Forest which will be made up of a network of newly planted and existing woodland across Wales. We are working with all types of landowners and managers including farmers, environmental NGOs, local authorities, charities, utility companies, health, transport and education organisations to identify opportunities to plant trees, supported by grant funding where required.
