What impact has the 20mph speed limit had on deaths on roads across Wales since its introduction?

Answered by Deputy Minister for Climate Change | Answered on 28/02/2024

The number of police recorded road collisions by the speed limit of the road where they occurred are routinely published and available on our website Accidents (gov.wales). On 14 February 2024, provisional figures were published for July to September 2023, however, this only covers two weeks of the national roll out.

The next police recorded road collisions release will cover full year 2023 (January to December). This will be available in April 2024 and new transport statistics and research, can be found on our website at Statistics and research | GOV.WALES.

It is too early to draw conclusions on the impact that 20mph has had on road collisions in Wales. Longer term data will form part of the Transport for Wales (TfW) Monitoring Framework for 20mph.
