How has professional training for teachers been developed since the introduction of the new curriculum?

We want all practitioners to have access to quality professional learning. A new professional learning area launched on Hwb in September. It aims to provide a single point of access to high quality, easily navigable professional learning, to meet the needs of all education professionals. Within the new Hwb area, practitioners can access professional learning opportunities to help them realise the curriculum. For example, the cross-regional Curriculum for Wales professional learning programme.

In addition, the Welsh Government provides £12m professional learning funding to schools on an annual basis to support the implementation of our key priorities, including Curriculum for Wales. The specific focus and content of professional learning is decided by schools, regional consortia, and local authorities.

The National Professional Learning Entitlement (NPLE), which launched in September 2022, sets out how the continued development of practitioners will support the schools or settings in which they work and their learners to realise the four purposes of Curriculum for Wales, supporting learners with additional learning needs and embedding equity, well-being and the Welsh language across the whole-school community.

The NPLE, the Schools as Learning Organisations model, and professional standards help schools and settings nurture a culture of professional learning and enquiry. This in turn, supports teachers to develop the professional knowledge and pedagogic skills to deliver the Curriculum for Wales.
