Will the Minister outline what provisions are in place to support older people who need to get to hospital appointments?

Answered by Minister for Health and Social Services | Answered on 27/02/2024

The Welsh Ambulance Services NHS Trust provides a Non-Emergency Patient Transport Service (NEPTS) for people who are unable, for medical reasons, to make their own way to and from their hospital appointments. More details about eligibility are available: Am I Eligible For NEPTS Transport? - Welsh Ambulance Services NHS Trust

Older people can also access support through the travel costs scheme. More detail, including the eligibility criteria is available at: Get help with NHS travel costs | GOV.WALES.

There is also an online self-assessment tool, which enables people to find out what support, if any, they are entitled to: https://check-for-help-paying-nhs-costs.nhsbsa.nhs.uk/start.

We do not capture or hold information about how many appointments have been missed by older people as a result of lack of access to transport.
