How has the Welsh Government identified opportunities for Welsh manufacturing in public sector supply chains in Wales?

Answered by Minister for Economy | Answered on 02/02/2024

The Delivery Group for the Manufacturing Action Plan, which includes the Welsh Government Lead on Public Sector Procurement, has identified three initial areas of spend, which will provide immediate and long-term opportunities for Wales based manufacturers. These cut across both public and private sector contracts.

Firstly, we have identified potential supply chains for Fixed and Floating Offshore Wind through supply chain mapping and establishing a dynamic platform for buyers and prime contractors to access information on these potential Welsh suppliers.  We have created an understanding of the critical components and the level to which the existing supply chain has capacity and capability to respond to such an opportunity.

Secondly, we are working on the Optimised RetroFit programme, which aims to improve the energy efficiency of Local Authority / Registered Social Landlord housing stock. We have identified the required products and local suppliers and are sharing the information with buyers.

Thirdly, we are supporting the procurement of the Electric Vehicle Infrastructure.  A Wales-wide framework contract is currently at an early stage, and we are analysing data to identify Welsh manufacturers who could be part of the supply chain.

We are looking at other areas of spend such as Food, Life Sciences and Transport with a view to commencing work on these during 2024.
