Will the Minister explain how the Welsh Government is ensuring that teachers are safeguarded from violence and abuse in schools, colleges and universities?

Answered by Minister for Education and the Welsh Language | Answered on 30/01/2024

Any form of violence or abuse against education staff is completely unacceptable.  We want our schools, colleges and universities to be safe and welcoming environments, where all staff are made to feel safe, ensuring every child and young person is supported to reach their potential. Positive behaviour and attendance are essential foundations for effective learning environments in which all members of the school, college and university community feel respected, safe and secure.

All schools are required to have a behaviour policy which promotes good behaviour on the part of its pupils. School behaviour and attendance policies shape the school ethos and they make a statement about how the school values and includes all the people in it.

Individual colleges and universities have their own student disciplinary policies, as well as wellbeing strategies which include measures to support staff wellbeing.
