What is the Welsh Government doing to promote animal welfare in Wales?

Answered by Minister for Rural Affairs and North Wales, and Trefnydd | Answered on 23/01/2024

Our ambition is for all animals in Wales to have a good quality of life. Our priorities are set out in the Animal Welfare Plan for Wales. It includes a timetable for the delivery of key actions against our Programme for Government commitments and other animal welfare priorities. A key area of focus is the promotion of responsible ownership through engagement with stakeholders, adoption and sharing of best practice, and effective enforcement.

The aims of our plan are strategically aligned to the Wales Animal Health and Welfare Framework which seeks to maintain and improve standards for kept animals, protect public health, and contribute to the economy and the environment: Wales Animal Health Welfare Implementation Plan (gov.wales)

We are making good progress to deliver our priorities for animal welfare. I will make a statement on our Animal Welfare Plan next month.
