What action is the Welsh Government taking to tackle racial abuse in schools?

Answered by Minister for Education and the Welsh Language | Answered on 17/01/2024

The Welsh Government has a zero-tolerance approach to any form of discrimination or prejudice-related bullying in the Welsh education system.  We expect the same from schools and education services.

We recognise the adverse impact racial abuse and bullying can have, and the long-lasting negative effects on children and young people.  We encourage schools not only to intervene when problems start to emerge, but to promote respectful relationships within the school community.

The Welsh Government provides a range of resources and support to schools and practitioners to tackle all forms of racist behaviour, bullying and harassment.  We are currently updating our statutory anti-bullying guidance, ‘Rights, Respect, Equality’, to strengthen the guidance provided to education settings and practitioners on prejudice-related bullying and handling racist incidents.
