What consideration did the Minister give to gender budgeting in the recently announced draft budget?

Answered by Minister for Finance and Local Government | Answered on 16/01/2024
  • Our budget continues to be shaped by the learning we are drawing from gender budgeting pilots and how this work can be further embedded and expanded going forwards.
  • The Strategic Integrated Impact Assessment (SIIA) of the Welsh Government Budget remains rooted in assessing the strategic and cumulative impacts of the choices we need to make. Undertaking this integrated approach and considering the intersectional impacts ensures we continue to focus funding where it can have the most positive impacts in the circumstances and enables us to take action to ensure we mitigate direct impacts to people and places, as far as possible.
  • We have also continued to engage with other Governments to share budget improvement experiences including on gender budgeting. We have continued to engage with the Welsh Women’s Budget Group and other stakeholders through the Budget Improvement Impact Advisory Group (BIIAG) to develop our approach to gender budgeting.
  • As is outlined in our Budget Improvement Plan, we have also committed to a review of the Strategic Integrated Impact Assessment which will be undertaken during 2024 and this will include how we can further embed a gender budgeting approach into the budget and tax processes.
