Will the Minister provide the number of GPs leaving the Welsh NHS for each of the last 5 years, broken down by health board?

Answered by Minister for Health and Social Services | Answered on 16/01/2024

The number of fully qualified permanent GPs who left or joined the workforce every June since 2020 is shown in tables 1 to 8 for Wales and each health board.

Fully qualified permanent GPs include GP partners, salaried GPs and GP retainers. It does not include locums or registrars.

A leaver is defined as being in contract at 30 June in the reference year but not 30 June of the next year.

A joiner is defined as in contract at 30 June in the reference year but not at 30 June of the previous year.

Data from the Wales National Workforce Reporting System is only available from 2020, therefore consistent data is only available for 4 years.

Note 1: As the same GP could be in contract with practices in more than one health board, the Wales number will not necessarily equal the sum of the health board numbers.

Note 2: The leaving statistics reflect those GPs leaving or joining general practice at the Wales level, therefore if a GP moved between health boards they would not count as a joiner or leaver in either health board.
