Further to WQ89949, what has been the reduction in secondary referrals as a proportion of the overall number of secondary referrals since the early work in Cardiff and Vale began?

Answered by Minister for Health and Social Services | Answered on 19/12/2023

Cardiff and Vale University Health Board started its referral pathway work before the COVID-19 pandemic. I have therefore provided figures showing the number of referrals into secondary care in the 12-month period before the pandemic and in the latest 12-month period, for all health boards and for Wales.

Table 1: Referrals into secondary care by Local Health Board, March 2019 to February 2020 and October 2022 to September 2023

March 2019 to February 2020

(pre covid)

October 2022 to September 2023

The data shows Cardiff and Vale University Health Board has seen a slight reduction in the number of referrals, in contrast to Wales as a whole, which has seen an increase of 10% over the same period.
