What discussion has the Minister had with National Museum Cardiff about the conditions of the museum buildings?

Answered by Deputy Minister for Arts, Sport and Tourism | Answered on 13/12/2023

At my most recent biannual meeting with the Chair and Chief Executive of Amgueddfa Cymru in September, they informed me that good progress had been made in dealing with maintenance and urgent repairs. They are also progressing projects which will help to modernise Amgueddfa Cymru’s estate, for which we are providing additional financial support.

My officials are in regular contact with Amgueddfa Cymru. Whilst we are aware of longer-term maintenance issues, we have been assured that the collections are safe.

I take the condition of Amgueddfa Cymru’s buildings and the safety of the national collections very seriously. I acknowledge the challenges facing Amgueddfa Cymru in managing and maintaining aging buildings, including National Museum Cardiff. This is why I have stipulated capital maintenance and the safety of the national collections as an agenda item at regular monitoring meetings with Amgueddfa Cymru. This allows my officials and I to be kept updated on progress made in dealing with the most urgent maintenance and any new issues as they arise.
