Further to the First Minister's response to OQ60305, will the Minister set out how many of the existing workforce are reducing their sessions and what is the net difference in whole time equivalent GPs?

Answered by Minister for Health and Social Services | Answered on 13/12/2023

As stated in OQ60305, between June 2022 and June 2023, the full time equivalent (FTE) for fully qualified GPs increased by 1%. This data is published on StatsWales.

In terms of existing workforce reducing hours, if we compare the GPs who were working both in June 2022 and June 2023:

  • 450 GPs were contracted to fewer hours in June 2023 than in June 2022
  • 424 GPs were contracted to more hours in June 2023 than in June 2022

The net difference was a reduction of 20 FTE GPs, or 1.3% of the workforce present in both time periods.

This reduction was more than offset by GPs joining the workforce in the same time period, as the overall FTE of GPs was 14.2 greater in June 2023 than in June 2022.
