What is the Welsh Government doing to support the animal rescue third sector on pet abandonment?

Answered by Minister for Rural Affairs and North Wales, and Trefnydd | Answered on 27/11/2023

I am aware of the pressures faced by animal rescue organisations resulting from increasing numbers of unwanted pets following the COVID19 pandemic and the recent rise in cost of living.

Through the Animal Welfare Network Wales and Companion Animal Welfare Group Wales, Officials work with third sector organisations, including the PDSA, Dogs Trust and Cats Protection to monitor the current situation. My officials have also contributed to discussion of related issues at the Pets Advertising Advisory Group, including the cost-of-living crisis and keeping pets and owners together.

Our social media campaign #pawspreventprotect reminds prospective purchasers of the need to do their research before buying a pet. It also encourages adoption from a rescue centre over purchasing from a breeder.
