What assessment has the Minister made of the yearly reduction in the proportion of teachers from England coming to teach in Wales?

Answered by Minister for Education and the Welsh Language | Answered on 30/11/2023

We note the 2023 Education Workforce Council (EWC) statistics which indicate a reduction in the percentage of Newly Qualified Teachers (NQT’s) being trained in England then registering with EWC.  This percentage has reduced over the past two years and is being monitored by EWC going forward.

The responsibility for the employment of teachers in schools lies with local authorities and governing bodies.  The governing body and local authority must each ensure that sufficient, suitable staff are employed or engaged to work at the school, to provide education appropriate for the ages, aptitudes, abilities and needs of the pupils.  With a small number of exceptions any registrant gaining QTS in England is automatically recognised in Wales. Teachers from England wishing to teach in Wales can register with the EWC to work as a school teacher in maintained schools in Wales. More broadly Welsh Government fund EWC’s Educators Wales website which offers a range of services bringing together career, training, and job opportunities within Welsh education.
