How is the Minister promoting the use of active travel in Wales?

Answered by Deputy Minister for Climate Change | Answered on 23/11/2023

We are promoting the use of active travel in a wide variety of ways, of which the examples below provide an overview.

Active Travel and sustainable transport is one of the four pillars of Climate Action Wales, which provides user friendly messages and resources on the simple steps people can take to reduce their carbon footprint. We have improved access to e-cycles through the E-move project as well as projects run by Pedal Power and Beics Ogwen.   We are providing funding to Sustrans to work with employers to support them to increase levels of active travel among their workforce.

A key focus of our efforts is to promote active travel to school in collaboration with partner organisations, including Sustrans, Living Streets and Public Health Wales to deliver programmes and resources for schools and school communities to encourage greater uptake of walking, wheeling and cycling.  Additionally, we have increased the funding available for cycle training this year, with a particular focus on providing additional training to families, adults and inclusive cycle training.

We recognise the importance of complementing infrastructure investment with promotional activity and encourage local authorities to incorporate this into their scheme proposals for our Active Travel Fund and Safe Routes in Communities Grant.
