What consideration has the Minister given to vehicles that have safety features such as automatic collision avoidance, that do not operate at 20mph or lower, in introducing the 20mph law?
Collision avoidance systems use technology such as sensors, cameras and algorithms to detect potential hazards and obstacles and can provide the driver with a warning, alert or intervention, to help avoid collisions.
The majority of such systems will operate as effectively at 20mph as 30mph. However, across vehicle manufacturers, collision avoidance systems do come with disclaimers and are additional support only, never a substitute for attentive driving. The time and space afforded by reduced speeds in built-up areas improves hazard awareness and reduces the risk of collisions.
