Will the Minister provide a breakdown of the numbers in each age group of individuals living in Wales who identify as transgender?

Answered by Deputy Minister for Social Partnership | Answered on 26/10/2023

The 2021 Census allowed respondents, for the first time, to record their gender identity as well as their sex. The census question on gender identity was a voluntary question asked of those aged 16 years and over. The question asked “Is the gender you identify with the same as your sex registered at birth?”. If the respondent chose to answer “No”, they were given the option to write in a gender identity.

An overview of the results for Wales can be found in our Sexual orientation and gender identity in Wales (Census 2021) topic summary. The Office for National Statistics (ONS) has produced a number of datasets where gender identity data can be explored alongside other variables captured in the Census, including age. These datasets can be accessed on the ONS sexual orientation and gender identity webpage.

This is a complex topic and the Office for National Statistics is currently carrying out research into various aspects of the quality of these data, the results of which it plans to publish in due course. More information can be found in Sexual orientation and gender identity quality information for Census 2021.
