Will the Minister review whether Cadw effectively safeguards Pont Fawr, a scheduled monument in Llanrwst?

Answered by Deputy Minister for Arts, Sport and Tourism | Answered on 09/10/2023

Cadw effectively safeguards Pont Fawr through its designation as a scheduled monument under the Ancient Monuments and Archaeological Areas Act 1979 and implementation of the associated consent regime. National guidance indicates presumption in favour of the preservation of such monuments.

Conwy County Borough Council is responsible for maintenance of the bridge and traffic management to minimise, as far as possible, accidental damage by vehicles. Where such damage occurs Cadw regulates the repairs through the requirement for scheduled monument consent and will continue to fast track the consent process so that repairs can be implemented sympathetically and quickly.

Following recent incidents of damage, Cadw officials met with Conwy County Council to review whether more measures could be put in place to safeguard the bridge from damage and improve the quality of repairs.  I understand that the Council is considering its options. Cadw will continue to provide specialist advice on request to the Council as necessary.
