What steps is the Welsh Government taking to promote the placing of grid infrastructure underground rather than on pylons?

The Welsh Government has set out its position on undergrounding grid infrastructure in Planning Policy Wales. Our preferred position on new power lines is that, where possible, they should be laid underground. However, it is recognised that a balanced view must be taken against costs that could render otherwise acceptable projects unviable.

Where undergrounding of lines is not possible or applicable, proactive engagement with energy companies and the public should take place to mitigate the visual impact of any potential new transmission lines. We are engaging with licensed network companies to ensure they have information to identify where undergrounding is appropriate.
