How much has the Welsh Government budgeted for the Anti-racist Wales Action Plan proposals for the renaming and replacement of streets, signs and statues?

Answered by Deputy Minister for Arts, Sport and Tourism | Answered on 08/09/2023

The Anti-racist Wales Action Plan does not propose the renaming and replacement of streets, signs and statues, and therefore no budget has been allocated to this activity.  The relevant goal within the action plan is ‘to work with public bodies to fully recognise their responsibility (individual and collectively) for setting the right historic narrative, promoting and delivering a balanced, authentic and decolonised account of the past – one that recognises both historical injustices and the positive impact of Black Asian and Minority Ethnic communities’.

The guidance for public bodies on public commemoration was consulted on at the end of last year, and the final document will be published before the end of this year. It focuses on helping public bodies reach well-informed decisions about existing and future commemorations (including statues, street and building names). It makes no specific recommendations about what decisions to make or action to take.
