Will the Minister introduce targets for use of domestically made steel in Welsh public sector projects?

Answered by Minister for Economy | Answered on 26/07/2023

There are no plans for the introduction of targets for the procurement of steel by the Welsh public sector.

However, the statutory guidance that will be published by Welsh Ministers under the Social Partnership and Public Procurement (Wales) Act will help public bodies in Wales take a suitable and proportionate approach to the procurement of construction materials for their projects.

This guidance will be published in advance of the duties coming into force which is expected to be in early 2025.

It is also worth noting that there is existing guidance for the procurement of steel aimed at the public sector in Wales in the Welsh Government’s Procurement Policy Note WPPN 01/21 Sourcing steel in major construction and infrastructure projects in Wales.
