What assessment has the Welsh Government made of its progress towards the goal of making Wales free of bovine TB by 2041?

Answered by Minister for Rural Affairs and North Wales, and Trefnydd | Answered on 20/07/2023

The TB eradication targets for Wales and interim targets for each TB region were announced in December 2017, which, if achieved, will see Wales become officially TB free by 2041. We have already seen significant progress in disease incidence since the programme was established in 2009, the regionalised approach builds on that progress.

Since 2019 an annual review of progress toward these TB eradication targets is carried out. It is published on the Welsh Government webpages and discussed as part of my annual statement on TB.

Interim targets, covering four 6-year periods, have been set for each of the TB Areas. A comprehensive review of the first quartile of the eradication target, which covers the period from 31 December 2017 to 31 December 2023, will be undertaken and reported in 2024 once the full dataset for 2023 is available.
