What assessment has the Minister made of the communication between health visitors and schools in preparation for children beginning their school life?

Answered by Minister for Health and Social Services | Answered on 18/07/2023

As part of the Healthy Child Wales Programme health visitors are required to complete a school handover summary document for use in schools by the school nursing service. Health visitors communicate with school nursing services and schools during a child’s transition to school, for example to raise any unmet health needs, outstanding immunisations or any additional safeguarding concerns.

We are currently developing the Healthy Child Wales Programme, Part 2, which aims to extend the universal offer to all school aged children. This work provides an ideal opportunity to review the transition between health visitors and schools/school nursing service.
