How is the Welsh Government working with regional consortia to improve teacher recruitment and retention?
All programmes of Initial Teacher Education (ITE) in Wales are designed and delivered by partnerships of Universities, schools and other partners including School Improvement Organisations (SIO). The SIOs work with the Partnerships to identify schools that are suitable to undertake placements for ITE students. They also provide resources to support schools to improve the quality and experience for ITE students who are on placement.
SIOs are also responsible for the delivery of Induction programmes for Newly Qualified Teachers (NQT). The revised Induction arrangements Induction for newly qualified teachers in Wales - Hwb (gov.wales) published in September 2022 requires SIOs to ensure that there is a focus on the quality and consistency of support provided to NQTs to offer them the best start in their careers.
ITE Partnerships and SIOs are currently working together to review assessment against the Professional Standards at both ITE and Induction level to remove unnecessary duplication and to provide a more coherent learning pathway for ITE students and NQTs.
