How is the Welsh Government working with partners to encourage the recycling of electric bike batteries?

Answered by Minister for Climate Change | Answered on 26/05/2023

The Waste Batteries and Accumulators Regulations 2009 introduced a system of producer responsibility that requires producers of batteries and accumulators (rechargeable batteries) to take responsibility for arranging the separate collection, treatment and recycling of batteries and accumulators when they become waste.

The main route for the recycling of electric bike batteries is for them to be taken to a household waste recycling centre, although retailers/shops may choose to offer a take back service.  We are also working to support the expansion of reuse and repair facilities including bike repair and recycling schemes, which have the potential to support active travel.

In partnership with the other governments in the UK, the Welsh Government are reviewing the battery regulations and the producer responsibility requirements, including considering measures to promote the wider recovery and reuse as well as improved recycling of all battery chemistry types as part of the transition to a circular economy.
