What action is the Minister taking to reduce waiting times for support for families of home educated children?
Local authorities are responsible for maintaining individual development plans (IDPs) for children who are electively home educated (EHE). The Additional Learning Needs (ALN) Act and ALN Code are clear about local authorities’ duties to prepare and maintain IDPs for children and young people with ALN.
We will shortly be publishing updated statutory guidance on electively home educated children which reinforces the duties outlined in the ALNET code on local authorities in relation to EHE children with ALN.
This financial year I have invested £12m to support ALN implementation and £9.1m to respond to additional pressures and social and emotional issues of ALN learners.
